Am I the only one who finds it ironic that the rudeness that some posters on this thread are displaying to one another is far greater than any rudeness that was displayed in the great library incident of 2009?

GUILT
by Gram inthis is such a heavy topic, very encompassing with many of us...i know that i still and perhaps always will, suffer from guilt -- on so many levels.. i just read this quote "guilt has been used as a tool of social control" -- i have also heard that guilt is 'anger with one's self" -- i would love to hear your expressions/etc.
about this subject.
can we ever rid ourselves of guilt?

I read this definition of guilt once that I really liked:
"Guilt is the emotion that lets us feel like good people for feeling bad about doing what we wanted to do in the first place!"
Isn't that a great definition!

No I didn't notice that Caliber. In that case, get to bed FHN!! You ought to be spanked, staying up so late on the internet. I don't believe in spanking either, but I'd make an exception for you.

What? You mean work and taking care of children are more important than arguing with strangers on the internet? Never!!! Maybe that's why I have no job?
My apologies if I made incorrect assumptions about your reasons for leaving us? My bad.

Has anyone else noticed that when FHN's arguments are challenged to the point where she can no longer defend them logically, she often just ends the thread and goes to bed but won't concede the point?

Why can't you believe the woman had no knowledge of your belief about children giving up chairs to adults before you gave her the "I know you know better" look?

Some people don't teach their children YOUR version of manners. They teach them their own version of good manners. If you feel so strongly that children giving up seats to adults is the only correct behaviour to have, then why not say something to educate her? Wouldn't you be doing her a favor. Why passively fume in the children's section and just hope she gets the message? Why not passionately defend your RIGHT to the chair?
I am exasperated by this discussion. Does that make you an exasperating person or does it just make me easily exasperated? Project much?

FHN, I'm quite aware that we don't live in Asia or Europe. The point of the analogy, which you obviously didn't get, is that the mother obviously lived in a different world/family then you did which did not share your belief about children giving up their seats as good manners. No, you did not directly ask her to give up the seat, that at least would have been assertive and direct and non-judgemental. You gave her a "look" that said " I know you know better" and told her that "In my day, children were expected to give up their seats to adults". So you made an assumption that she "knew better" and that's the assumption I was challenging. And you made an assumption that children should give up their seats to adults over college age. That was also challenged. Then you sat and fumed because this woman didn't share your assumptions and went and started an interent disucssion forum. Now you seem upset that not everyone on this forum is agreeing with your assumptions either.
Some might consider you as dissecting the woman's behaviour to a minute degree over what is a relatively minor issue. When your behaviour in the interaction that you brought under discussion is examined, then all of a sudden it is minutia to you. You can't have it both ways. Either the issue is worth discussing and dissecting or it isn't.

Calibre;
Individual libraries can make their own rules and policies and if such was the case in FHN's library about not reserving seats, then she could have just sat down and if the mother said anything then pointed to the rules on the wall. End of issue.
The debate here was about much more general statements that were made asserting that "good" manners make it imperative that children give up their seats to adults.
